Snickerdoodles, don’t ya just love saying that? Anyway, these traditional cookies have been around for quite some time and are a family favorite for us. As I read from Joy of Baking, these crinkly cinnamon sugar cookies are
“also called Snipdoodles or Cinnamon Sugar Cookies. Recipes for this cookie started to appear in the late 1800s, and most agree they probably originated in New England and are of either German or Dutch descent.”
Interesting huh? I didn’t know that for the longest time and I am sure most people baking them don’t either! No wonder why there are snickerdoodle recipes everywhere!
What is so special about snickerdoodles?
Have you had one?? They are truly delicious and very easy to make! I mean who doesn’t love cinnamon and sugar on a crinkly cookie! For me, I would say I love the taste and texture but also I love that they just remind me of Christmas growing up. My mom has always had these babies in her cookie line up every year, and now so do I. As I have told you previously my mom used to make about 2,000 cookies every year for Christmas. I usually do a little over 1,000 as I mentioned in Home Bakers Tips and Tricks. Anyway, she used to make little cookie trays and send them out to family and friends as gifts. Through the years we both have carried on this tradition but have made less and don’t send out just handoff. Sometimes we change up what is in our cookie line ups but one thing stays true. We always keep snickerdoodle cookies on that list!
Is this your snickerdoodle cookie recipe?
Nope! My mom has been using this Better Homes and Gardens recipe since I can remember! I have loved it so much I use it as well.
Have you made any changes to this recipe?
One tiny change but it has nothing to do with the batter. I prefer plenty of cinnamon sugar to roll in so I double that part but the snickerdoodle cookie recipe is perfect all on its own, no dough changes from me!
Can snickerdoodle cookies be made vegan, dairy-free, and gluten-free?
I personally haven’t tried it but you can easily swap out the butter for vegan butter and use a vegan egg. For one flax egg, you would need 1 tbsp ground flax meal and 3 tbsp water, let sit in your fridge for 15 minutes to set up and thicken prior to using in the recipe. For Gluten-free try bobs red mill gluten-free flour on a 1 to 1 ratio.
Are these a Christmas cookie?
Not necessarily, you can enjoy them any time of year! We make them mostly from fall through winter, but anytime you are craving a cinnamon sugar cookie whip up a small batch of these Snickerdoodle cookies and you will not be disappointed!
Snickerdoodle Cookies
Equipment
- Stand Mixer
- small cookie scoop
Ingredients
- 1 1/2 cups flour or bobs red mill gluten-free baking flour
- 1/4 tsp baking soda
- 1/4 tsp cream of tarter
- 1 stick of butter softened or vegan butter
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 1 egg or flax egg, see recipe notes
- 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
- 4 tbsp granulated sugar for rolling
- 2 tsp cinnnamon for rolling
Instructions
- In a stand mixer beat butter on medium to high speed for 30 seconds. Add the 1 cup sugar, baking soda, and cream of tartar. Beat until combined, scraping sides of bowl occasionally. Beat in egg and vanilla. Beat in as much of the flour as you can with the mixer. Using a wooden spoon, stir in any remaining flour. Cover and chill in the refrigerator for 1 hour.
- In a small bowl combine the 4 tablespoons sugar and the cinnamon. Shape dough into balls using a small cookie scoop. Roll balls in the sugar-cinnamon mixture to coat. Place 2 inches apart on an ungreased cookie sheet.
- Bake in a 375 degree F oven for 10 to 11 minutes or until edges are golden brown. Transfer cookies to a wire rack; cool.

I made these for the first time when I was 9 years old for a 4-H project. Brings back all of the memories and the smell of cinnamon sugar!
Yes, those cherished memories! I love baking things that bring in tradition!
This is exactly what I was thinking. We learned how to make these for 4-H. Always love snickerdoodles and they bring back such good memories.
Great memories for me too!
This looks like a perfect snickerdoodle recipe! I can’t wait to try this one! Snickerdoodles are a mainstay cookie in our house! Thank you!
My pleasure!
Love snickerdoodles. What a vintage cookie for sure. Give me a plate and a cup of tea (or coffee) and I am a happy girl. So easy to make! You have me inspired to make some this season. Thanks.
Yay!
Yes please! These look delish. A friend introduced me to these growing up. Not sure why they weren’t in my family recipe box! Haha
Get them in there, lol you won’t be disappointed!
My grandma used to make Snickerdoodles all the time and my mom did as well. I love them, but haven’t made them in soooo long. I printed out your recipe and will have to give it a try again. Thanks so much for the reminder.
Awesome, I hope you try them!
Great recipe for making these great cookies. It sounds delish so I am going to add this to my baking list. Thanks for sharing.
Yay!
A thousand cookies? I remember making frosted sugar cookies for the family as gifts. It was nearly my undoing and I didn’t make anywhere near that many. I can’t even imagine.
Lol, it sounds like a whole lot but when you are giving out boxes or trays it isn’t too much. We have about 10-15 different kinds of cookies and each batch makes about 75 cookies, some kinds we make double batches. Whenever we make too much we do give away to our local Starbucks. Sometimes we forget and make one or two too many batches!
These look delicious! We don’t celebrate Christmas but love us a good cookie. Our favorite has to be a classic chocolate cookie!
Yum!
I love snickerdoodles! They are so good!
Definitely!
Yum, no matter what time if year I have these it always reminds me of holidays as a kid.
Me too!
Thanks for including the vegan options. These look super yummy!
Thank you!!
I would totally make these. They look great!
Thank you!
I love snickerdoodles! Store bought is not nearly as good as homemade though!!!
Yes, homemade is always best!
I am probably the only person living that has never tried one! They sound divine and may just have to make a batch.
Oh my!! Never? No worries you can whip up a batch and see why these are so amazing!!
Love snickerdoodles! You’ve inspired me – I’m going to make some today!
If you have the Joy of Cooking, I wonder if you’d do me a huge favor? I need the ingredient list for Buttermilk Biscuits and for Basic pie crust. Cannot find my JOC in my storage shed. If you wouldn’t mind? Email to Suz55tbird@msn.com – maybe simply photos if that’s easier?
I emailed you what I hope would work. Hopefully, I’ve found what you are looking for.
Oh my, I love snickerdoodle cookies, but I’ve never tried to make them. You make it look so easy.
They are very easy!
We use to make these when I was growing up during the holidays. Haven’t had them in so long!
Maybe this is a sign!
We love snickerdoodles! We tried a pumpkin version last month for our Thanksgiving. This cinnamon version will be perfect for Christmas!
Definitely!
Looks like a great treat!
Thank you!
One of my favorite cookies! And I have made the vegan version and they turn out fine.
Awesome! You can never go wrong with a traditional snickerdoodle!
I love snickerdoodles! So classic and scrumptious!
Yes, they are!!
These are my favorite! I love the vegan options- my bf thinks eggs in baked goods are weird. LOL.
Hmmm… that is interesting! One of my cousins is allergic so we have a few eggless recipes!
