I am sure everyone has had their fair share of headaches am I right? I know I have, definitely have had way more than I’d like. Sometimes it helps to know why you have them….

  • Are you drinking enough water?
  • Have you been skipping meals
  • Enough rest? Too much Rest?
  • Stressed?
  • Missing nutrients?
  • Allergies?

I know as well as any that it could even just be hormones. Yep, any of these could attribute to your headache. You could have even slept wrong or maybe clench/grind your teeth at night. I mean it’s pretty endless as to why we get them but we do and I have to tell you the secret isn’t pain reliever! I’m sure you’ve even got a few of these around the house!

Ginger

Yeah that’s right ginger helps to naturally relieve headaches, including migraines and I have to say it’s also really great for a whole lot of other reasons. Reduces nausea, amazing for digestion, even naturally lowers your blood sugar. It also tastes great!

So what do you do with it? Well simple, 1/8 tsp in a cup of water. You don’t even need to boil the water if you don’t want to, you could if you want if the taste bothers you. You could add other supper herbs like cinnamon to it or maybe you just want to cover up the taste with honey. You do you, but if you want to get reduce your pain naturally I highly suggest it. Just take the 1/8 tsp of ground ginger mix it in about a cup of water and drink it. Your headache should get better in 30 mins. It may not completely go away but it will definitely help relieve some pain.

Acupressure points

This is a great way for homeopathic headache relief. It’s hard to take your own photos doing these points so I found an amazing video I found very helpful from BuzzFeed’s Goodful. This video has 7 pressure points including the temples I mention earlier. You can try all 7 or start with one and see how it works for you.

Goodfull’s acupressure points to relieve headache.

Massage

This co-insides a little with acupressure but not totally. I am talking about paying to get a massage. You could have toxins that need to be released that massages or Epsom salt baths can help. Maybe there is a toxin in your body causing your headaches. Maybe you’re just tight and full of tension. Whatever it is, if you have the money a massage will never hurt. Well maybe it will but only if its deep tissue so stick to a simple Swedish unless you’re into a deep massage.

Ice

Yes! Ice ice baby! Ice your headache/migraine away! I can tell you this for sure is one of my favorite ways to get reduce that pain. It doesn’t take long just 15 mins so grab a bag of frozen peas, corn, ice cubes, cold pack and ice your brain! Do not do it longer than 15 mins though you want to only compress for 15 mins at a time on and off. So 15 mins of ice, 15 mins off. That pretty much goes for any body part by the way.

Heat

Yeah now the opposite direction I know. If your headache stems from tension or sinuses or maybe you slept wrong. The head should help your headache better. If you don’t have a heating pad though a nice hot shower should help too.

No Lights

Maybe your lights at work or home are too bright? Either dim them or shut them completely. That goes for your electronics too. The computer, tv, cell phone, tablet. Maybe the headache is your body’s way of saying please give the electronics a break.

Peppermint Oil

Peppermint oil can be used for muscle aches by applying to the skin but if you choose to do so please test on a small area as some people can be allergic. You can also use it for common colds by opening up your airways, it is also effective for nausea. My favorite use is for headaches as well as migraines. There are a few ways you could use the peppermint oil (make sure it’s 100 % pure) you could breathe it in through steam which can help but I find its effects can be diluted so let’s go with my favorite method. If you have never used peppermint oil before as stated above make sure it is 100 % pure and please try it on a small portion of your skin because you’re going to dab a little under your nose. Just take a Q-tip/cotton swab and tilt the peppermint oil on to the swab making sure it’s one or two drops it doesn’t need to be soaked. Swab directly under your nostrils, one swab under both. If your headache is really intense put some of the oil on your temples and rub them while breathing in the peppermint that’s under your nose. You will feel relief soon after.

Bananas

Bananas have potassium, magnesium and vitamin b. You could be missing a nutrient that’s listed above. If you don’t love bananas there are so many ways you can eat them without tasting them. Maybe have a fruit smoothie with other fruits to mask the taste! In this case, it’s not an apple a day to keep the doctor away, it’s the banana! If you are low on those nutrients try to get them elsewhere if you are not a banana fan.

Almonds

Almonds have magnesium which if you don’t eat enough of magnesium can definitely cause a headache. I personally love almonds and probably eat them in some form a few times a week if not every day. I don’t eat fish so almonds are my largest source of magnesium.

Epsom Salt

I have found if I am stressed sometimes I just need to destress. Either put some Epsom salts in a hot bath and relax or buy your self a heated foot spa that you can add Epsom salt to. Epsom salt that had lavender is the best for a stress headache, maybe throw some peppermint in while you’re at it. Also Epsom salts have magnesium in them.

Still not gone?

If this headache is a constant thing and you are always popping pain reliever I would check with your doctor but in the meantime try these remedies and put that box of pain reliever down! If you’ve tried all of these and there is still no luck then I think you need to answer these questions below for yourself.

  • Consuming enough water? If not you could be dehydrated.
  • Skipping meals? Food headache.
  • Do you sleep enough?
  • Do you sleep too much?
  • Did you sleep oddly? Maybe your body is tight causing tension in your neck and head.
  • Are you stressed?
  • Do you have enough magnesium in your body?
  • Are you low on electrolytes?
  • Do you eat properly to get enough nutrients?
  • If not do you take supplements to replace those nutrients you’re missing?
  • Have you been allergy tested? If not you should. If so maybe it’s time for a retest, you could have a new allergy you are unaware of.
  • Are any of your pollutants high on the days you have a headache?
  • Have you recently given up caffeine? You could have a withdrawal.
  • Do you grind or clench your teeth at night? If you do your dentist should be able to tell you and that could definitely attribute to your headache, in which case a mouth guard may be something to look into.
  • Do you stare at bright lights for long periods of time? Like your computer or other electronics.
  • Do you drink wine the night prior to a headache day? You may love your wine but the sulfates may be causing your headache!
  • Are you getting your period or have a baby recently, maybe menopause? Your hormones could be causing your headaches.
  • When there are changes in the weather do you find yourself in pain? The weather is actually one of my biggest triggers so don’t feel weird, its super possible that the weather can mess with you.
headaches

If you answered yes to any of these maybe you’ve figured out the route and you could be on your way to feeling better. If none of these questions have made you think twice then it is time to speak with your doctor. Taking pain medicine is not good all the time. You could make yourself worse in the long run, so please try the natural way before popping those pills.

I hope you found this post useful. If you have any other natural ways to help with your headache pain please comment below I would love to know what you do.

  • Great tips – I am a huge lover of peppermint oil. Rather than relying on a bunch of chemical products, that is how I treat my allergies most of the time! It does a great job of clearing the sinuses and getting rid of sinus headaches.

    • Yes definitely, I have suffered greatly in the past with allergies and sinuses so that will be another post. Family and friends call me Dr. Alyssa as a joke because I’m always telling them what they should do 😂

  • I have never tried drinking water with ginger in it to cure a headache. I will have to try that. I always prefer natural remedies to taking medicine. Great suggestions.

  • Great read! I get headaches often and peppermint oil is my best friend. I try not to take excedrin or other medicines, so I love some of these new ideas. I’ve also journaled to try to identify a pattern.

    • Sounds like you understand your body well. It’s never a bad thing to take notes on your self 🙂

  • Such good tips, thank you! I’ve been getting headaches more than usual so I’ll definitely be trying these out!

  • This is such a great post with so much detail! I often find that a little rest, some more water or a pressure points massage is usually enough to make mine go away if I ever get one. I’ve never heard of ginger for headaches before though, that’s really interesting x

  • These are some great tips. I use to get plenty of headaches due to chronic back pain and sinus infection. After, a few massages, healthy food, and a lot of dill I get them way more rarely. Thank you for sharing.

    • Your welcome! Yes sinus infections are the worst I’ve dealt with them my entire life, I’ll have a post about them in the future.

  • This such a helpful post! I’ve never considered half of these options, i am terrible at just taking some painkillers. But I’ll try and do some of these things in future. Thanks for sharing ☺️

  • I love when there are natural ways to relieve some pain, especially headaches. There are so many different factors that can contribute to headaches and it is pretty much a sign of something when it happens. Ginger is so good for you- even for colds! Ooooh!! I agree with the peppermint oil as well. So good for you! Thanks for sharing all of these options!

    • Thank you! It’s a common problem that a lot of people just throw ibuprofen at, not many people realize how easy it is to reduce this pain naturally if not completely alleviate it.
